Ricky's Backstory: The Making of a Modern Analyst

Ricky's career arc is impressive, having served in the Army as a military intelligence analyst and acquiring a wealth of knowledge from his experiences in various fields. "I grew up around the world," he explains, referring to his dynamic upbringing and education at St. John's University. After returning from Afghanistan, Ricky wrapped up his MBA with a concentration in real estate—a nod to his family's business.

Understanding OSINT: A Tool for Everyone

Ricky’s explanation of OSINT begins with defining intelligence itself. According to him, intelligence is "the refinement of data into usable information to achieve a goal." He elaborates, "The open source part...is the legal gray area where you are going to public records," utilizing public information from platforms like social media or government websites. This process is applicable across various fields, whether it's assessing threats or understanding market trends.

Practical Uses of OSINT for Everyone

Ricky discusses using OSINT in a relatable, everyday context, such as protecting family. He suggests that before investigating someone, it is crucial to understand what makes a person a potential threat. For instance, "If you start by saying, well, somebody who is violent...let's do a basic background check." By leveraging common websites and background check services, people can gauge potential threats.

Moreover, he emphasizes understanding psychological aspects when examining someone's online activity. He advises parents to educate their children about online threats, stating, "It's educating the kid that, listen...Making the child aware of a problem that they can succumb to is...like the first shield."

Safeguarding Your Property and Privacy

Ricky draws on his experience in real estate to discuss the vulnerabilities associated with property ownership. He cautions, "If I know the name of your bank...I can just send a fake letter," highlighting the risk of deceptive practices. He advises property owners to stay vigilant and informed about their financial obligations and to monitor any suspicious activity involving their property records.

In terms of privacy, Ricky suggests decentralizing personal identities online. "Rather than trying to make yourself impenetrable...this is the time when you can control the narrative of who you are," he explains. By using different emails for various purposes and controlling the narrative of their online presence, individuals can protect themselves against potential threats.
